Are you interested in what is written on the ‘About the Author’ page? Would you rather not know not what the author of your favourite novel looks like or how many cats they have?
I am always curious to find out if an author is local to me, and if a story that has resonated with me is written by someone who may share some of my values or interests.
For the next few weeks I am going to take apart my own ‘About the Author’ page, starting with the first 10 words. I would start with the first five but unfortunately some leeway has to be given for my name.
I thought it fitting to start with ‘poet’ because this month I am going to be performing poetry twice first for Winter Pride. Poetry has always informed the way I write and has impacted my craft. I believe my literary style is strongly impacted by my poetry. In fact, one trick I have is when I am struggling to write a section or chapter, I will try and write it as a poem before turning it into prose.
My poetry is often very domestic focused on how the small things in life are representative of larger issues, a theme that is present in Not All There. However, my poetry, particularly my loveless poetry also expands upon themes of gender, asexuality and aromanticism. Happy Aromantic Awareness Week to everyone who is celebrating!
I hope to do a few more of these dives into the author page each Friday, and I hope you enjoyed this one on being a poet as well as an author.
